How to Use YouTube to TRanscribe Your video for Component 3
I'm working on Video 1 for C3 and I noticed I was using a lot of time going back and forth listening to my video clip trying to remember what I said/my students said. Wouldn't it be nice if there was a transcript I could reference more quickly instead... Here's a way to easily and quickly transcribe your entire video for FREE using YouTube. It'll take you ten minutes max, promise! (Scroll down to the bottom if you'd rather watch a quick 30-second tutorial).
Step 1: Upload your video to YouTube
You'll want to change the privacy option to "Private".
STEP 2: Wait
Walk away from your computer for at least half an hour to give YouTube time to process, upload, and transcribe your video. If you try to look for the transcript too soon, the option won't show up. (To find the transcript, you'll have to click the three vertical dots on the bottom right of the video. Here you can see that "Open Transcript" is not an option yet.)
STEP 3: Open up the transcript and Toggle the Timestamps off
When your video is finally ready, you can go back to the video, click the three vertical dots on the bottom right, and then toggle the timestamps off (that way they don't show up when you copy and paste).
Step 4: Finally copy+paste into a google doc
If you want to do further editing, you can. I, for example, color coded all my speech blue and all my students' speech red. I also highlighted main parts of the transcript I thought were particularly impactful and added comments about how I wanted to use each dialogue as a piece of evidence. Now that you have this transcript, it'll be a lot more efficient to write about your video for Component 3. Good luck!
